Hey there, fellow adventurers in the job market jungle! Yobi Salazar here, your trusty guide through the digital wilderness of job applications. And let me tell you, gone are the days of printing out a stack of resumes and wandering from one company's doorstep to another, hoping for a stroke of luck. Nope, in this day and age, everything's gone digital! You can now scout for your dream job online, complete with all the juicy details about the role and the perks that come with it.

Now, whether you're a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into the job market waters, fear not! I've got all the insider tips to help you nail your online job application every single time. So grab your resume, dust off your keyboard, and let's dive right in!

DO:

  • Customize Your Application: Think of your resume and cover letter as your personal highlight reel. Tailor them to each job you apply for, emphasizing the skills and experiences that make you the perfect fit. Copy-pasting? Yikes! Employers can tell when you haven't put in the effort to customize your application. Plus, it shows that you don't understand the company's needs. Take the time to understand what they're looking for, and then offer up your skills like a pro!

  • Double-Check for Errors: Trust me, nothing screams "unprofessional" louder than a typo-ridden application. So take a few extra minutes to proofread your materials – it could make all the difference! In this digital age, we've got software and apps to help us catch those pesky typos. Don't be afraid to use them! Just remember, it's okay to use AI tools to enhance your writing as long as the original ideas are yours.

  • Use Keywords: Think of keywords as secret codes that unlock the door to your dream job. Incorporate industry-specific terms into your application to catch the eye of both humans and those pesky applicant tracking systems. Just like how you customized your applications, be specific! For example, if you're applying as a video editor, include keywords like ad videos, UGC videos, TikTok reels, and the software you're proficient in. Trust me, it makes a world of difference!

  • Follow Instructions: Remember when our moms used to say, "Follow the recipe"? Well, the same goes for job applications. Pay close attention to the instructions provided by the employer – they're there for a reason! And if something's unclear, don't be afraid to ask questions! The hiring team is always encouraging questions, so take advantage of that. It shows that you're detail-oriented and willing to go the extra mile to get things right.

  • Research the Company: Ever heard the saying, "Knowledge is power"? Well, it's true! Take some time to research the company before applying. Not only will it help you tailor your application, but it'll also show your potential employer that you're genuinely interested in the gig. And here's a pro tip: share their vision! Companies love it when you're aligned with their goals. So don't just say you want to work there for the salary – show them that you want to help deliver their vision to the world. You've got this!

DONTS:

  • Use Slang or Jargon: While it's important to incorporate industry-specific keywords, avoid using slang or jargon that might not be universally understood. You want your application to be clear and professional, so stick to language that is appropriate for a professional setting.
Just like I wouldn't use bear expressions when talking with my bear colleagues and family, since they wouldn't understand it at all, I use simple English that is widely and more commonly used in our office here at Jobyoda.

  • Ramble On: Your application materials should be concise and to the point. Avoid rambling or including unnecessary information that doesn't directly relate to the job you're applying for. Keep your resume and cover letter focused on highlighting your relevant skills and experiences.
Like including one time we were on a business trip in Baguio City for a successful campaign and we got sidetracked by the delicious strawberry farm, and locals offered us lots of free honey. It was a fun experience indeed, but not necessary to share. Save this detail for when you're best friends already.

  • Submit Without Researching: Just as you wouldn't blindly wander into unknown territory without a map, don't submit your application without researching the company first. Avoid generic cover letters or resumes that could apply to any company. Tailor your application to the specific company and role you're applying for to demonstrate your genuine interest and enthusiasm.
Just like I said before, get to know your company first. You need to know if they are the right team for you, as you will spend a significant amount of time with them if accepted. Your efforts should count.

  • Lie or Exaggerate: Honesty is always the best policy when it comes to job applications. Never lie or exaggerate your skills, experiences, or qualifications. Not only is it unethical, but it can also come back to haunt you if you're caught. Be truthful about your abilities and focus on highlighting your genuine strengths and accomplishments.
I myself can finish 5 bottles of honey in a day. But besides that, I can only write 1 or 2 blogs a day, depending on the topic I would write about. I will give them the right expectations, of course. Since we can't be superhuman (or in my case: Superbear), it's okay to be confident with your skills as long as you can live up to them as well.

And there you have it, folks – my tried-and-true dos and don'ts for mastering the online job application game. With a little bit of effort and a whole lot of personality, you'll be well on your way to landing your dream job in no time. So go forth, my friends, and conquer the job market – I'll be cheering you on every step of the way! 🌟
